  • Public urged to verify sources before sharing content
  • AI-generated videos increasingly used for fraud and blackmail

The Cybercrime Unit of Jordan’s Public Security Directorate renewed its warning on Monday about the growing misuse of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies, emphasizing their role in facilitating criminal activities such as financial fraud, defamation, and blackmail.

Criminal misuse of deepfake technology

In a statement, the unit said AI tools are increasingly being exploited to produce “deepfake” images and videos that appear authentic but are entirely fabricated. These manipulated materials are being used in a range of crimes, including:

  • Defamation and slander: targeting public figures or private individuals.
  • Blackmail: threatening victims with the release of fabricated or compromising content.
  • Financial fraud: impersonating trusted individuals to solicit money or sensitive information.
  • Incitement: spreading false videos or statements to fuel social or family disputes.

Legal action and ongoing monitoring

The unit confirmed it continues to monitor and take legal action against individuals or platforms sharing AI-generated videos for malicious purposes. It noted that several citizens have already filed complaints after falling victim to scams or extortion, while others faced legal consequences for unknowingly sharing manipulated videos.

Awareness as the first line of defense

Authorities urged the public to exercise caution and critical thinking when engaging with online content. Citizens were advised to:

  • Question authenticity: avoid taking every post or video at face value.
  • Verify sources: ensure that any shared media originates from credible outlets.
  • Avoid sharing unverified content: to prevent legal accountability and curb misinformation.

The Cybercrime Unit concluded by emphasizing that combating digital deception starts with users themselves, stressing that awareness and responsibility remain the strongest defense against the misuse of artificial intelligence.
