Gal Gadot’s Snow White stumbles at box office with bust opening
Disney's live-action remake of "Snow White," starring Rachel Zegler and Gal Gadot, opened to a disappointing USD 43 million domestically in its opening weekend, falling short of the projected USD 50 million.
The film, directed by Marc Webb, faced various challenges leading up to its release, including backlash over casting choices, the depiction of CGI dwarfs, on-set incidents, and controversial comments by the lead actress.
Despite these hurdles, the film's underperformance contributed to a domestic box office gross of USD 77 million for the weekend, with overall revenue for the year still down nearly 7 percent compared to the previous year.
Internationally, "Snow White" grossed USD 44.3 million, bringing its total to USD 87.3 million, which is below initial projections.
The original 1937 animated "Snow White" was a significant success for Disney, making the current film's lackluster performance more pronounced.
This year, Disney also plans to release another live-action remake, "Lilo & Stitch," and anticipates that an upcoming "Minecraft" movie will be a major draw. "Captain America: Brave New World" continues to hold the record for the strongest domestic opening of the year so far, with USD 88.8 million.
