Safwat Raslan, Governor of the Central Bank of Syria, conducted the first bank card purchase using an electronic payment terminal in a local store in the governorate of Idlib.
Raslan, appointed in May 2026 after heading the Syrian Development Fund, completed the transaction in a ceremonial event aimed at promoting electronic payments.
The move highlights ongoing efforts to modernize Syria's financial system following years of conflict and cash-dominated transactions.

This development builds on recent initiatives, including partnerships with global networks, and the licensing of electronic payment services.
Earlier trials occurred in Damascus, but the Idlib event marks a visible rollout in northern markets.
The step is seen as part of broader economic recovery under President Ahmed al-Sharaa, seeking to restore banking confidence, reduce cash reliance, and facilitate trade and tourism. Wider adoption will depend on expanding infrastructure across stores and regions.
