Three Syrian security personnel were wounded after a gunman attacked a security checkpoint at the entrance to the city of Jaramana in the Damascus countryside, according to Syria's state-run SANA news agency.
A security source told SANA that officers stopped two men riding a motorcycle as part of routine identity checks at the checkpoint.
According to the source, one of the suspects suddenly pulled out a handgun, fired several shots into the air, and then threw two hand grenades toward the checkpoint, wounding three security personnel. The injured officers were taken to hospital for treatment.
Attacker killed, second suspect arrested
The source said the assailant attempted to throw a third grenade, but it exploded in his hand before he could release it, killing him at the scene.
Authorities later identified the attacker as a suspect wanted in multiple criminal cases, including murder and drug trafficking, according to the security source.
The second man, who was accompanying the attacker on the motorcycle, was arrested and transferred to the relevant authorities for questioning.
Syrian authorities said investigations are continuing to determine the full circumstances and motive behind the attack and to identify anyone else who may have been involved.
