  • Amman installs new smart cameras to monitor speed, seatbelts, and phone use for safer roads.

The Greater Amman Municipality has accelerated the deployment of its ambitious traffic surveillance project, installing a new batch of smart cameras at critical and busy locations across the city. The initiative aims to deploy 5,500 cameras by the end of the year as part of Amman’s vision to become a “smart city.”

Smart Cameras Target Seatbelt, Phone, and Speed Violations

The newly installed cameras are equipped to detect mobile phone use, failure to wear seatbelts, and speeding violations. Key locations include:

  • Fourth Circle toward Fifth Circle
  • Mecca Street after Mecca Mall toward Shaab Circle
  • Gardens Street after Jebri Signal toward Oasis Circle
  • Mutall Street from Qarqash Circle toward Yasmin
  • Salt Road after Um Al-Naaj Bridge toward Amman
  • Dabouq after Al-Nesr Signal toward Baccalaureate
  • Biader Wadi Al-Seer after UNRWA building
  • Downtown after Al-Mirbat Bridge toward Raghadan Complex

Radar Cameras Monitor Speed Across Major Routes
In addition, speed-monitoring cameras have been installed in high-risk areas, including:

  • Hizam Road toward Amman Customs
  • Ain Ghazal descent for dangerous slopes
  • Khalda after the tunnel toward Hussein Gardens
  • Queen Alia Street (Landmark) at the hotel descent in both directions
  • Yajouz Street toward Shafa Badran
  • Al-Muqablin near Sobhi Abu Ghloos Institution (speed limit 70 km/h)
  • King Abdullah I Street new location
  • Airport Road from Kharibat Al-Souq toward the airport
  • Abdoun descent toward Yasmin area

Safety, Not Revenue: The Municipality’s Message

Mohammed Jaddou’, Executive Director of Traffic at the Amman Municipality, emphasized that the goal of the project is saving lives, not collecting fines. He said the cameras will help deter violations and change driver behavior, contributing to overall road safety.

Why These Cameras Matter

  • Reducing fatal accidents caused by speeding or distracted driving
  • Enforcing traffic law and deterring dangerous maneuvers
  • Data collection to improve traffic light timing and road planning
  • Supporting security investigations in case of accidents

The new network of cameras represents a major step in Amman’s push toward a smarter, safer city, providing both real-time enforcement and long-term traffic insights.
