The mayor of Greenland’s capital has called on media professionals and content creators to act responsibly following a controversial flag stunt by a German comedian.

Incident in Nuuk

Bavarian comedian Maxi Schafroth, 41, attempted to hoist the US flag near Nuuk’s cultural centre on Thursday. The act drew immediate attention and confrontation from passers-by, prompting police involvement. Schafroth was subsequently fined, according to local media reports.

Schafroth is known in Germany for his work on the satirical programme Extra Drei, broadcast by the NDR channel and attracting over one million viewers. In a statement to Der Spiegel and the Ritzau agency, NDR expressed “regrets” over the incident.

Mayor Voices Concerns

Avaaraq Olsen, mayor of Kommuneqarfik Sermersooq, which includes Nuuk, condemned the stunt.

“Raising a flag at our capital cultural centre, the flag of a military superpower that for weeks has been implying military force against our country, is not a joke,” Olsen said. “It is not funny. It is immensely harmful.”

Olsen stressed that Greenlanders, particularly children, have been left worried and afraid by the ongoing geopolitical situation. She warned that actions staged for content or laughs can deepen public anxiety.

“You are adding to the distress of an already vulnerable population... So, pause before you film. Think before you stage something ‘funny’,” Olsen said.

“Consider whether your next question or stunt will inform the world or simply make a child cry or a family feel less safe in their own country.”

Broader Context

The incident comes amid rising global concern over military tensions involving Greenland, a strategic region in the Arctic. Olsen’s warning underscores the sensitivity of public sentiment and the potential consequences of provocative content in a region already facing geopolitical pressures.
