  • Google to invest USD15 billion in India over five years to build a massive AI and data hub in Visakhapatnam, its largest outside the US.

  • Move signals India’s growing role in global AI development, welcomed by government leaders as a “game-changing” boost to the digital economy.

Google announced plans on Tuesday to pour USD 15 billion into India over the next five years, unveiling a massive data center and artificial intelligence hub in the southern city of Visakhapatnam.

“It is the largest AI hub that we are investing in anywhere outside of the US,” said Thomas Kurian, CEO of Google Cloud, during a ceremony in New Delhi.

Kurian said the company’s capital investment would fund a gigawatt-scale AI hub, which is expected to “scale to multiple gigawatts” over time.

The investment comes as demand for AI-driven tools and infrastructure continues to rise in India, which is projected to have more than 900 million internet users by the end of the year.

India’s IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw welcomed the move, saying, “This digital infrastructure will go a long way in meeting goals of our India AI vision.”

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu called it a “very happy day,” while state Technology Minister Nara Lokesh described it as a “game-changing investment” following “a year of intense discussions and relentless effort.”

“It is a massive leap for our state's digital future, innovation, and global standing,” Lokesh wrote on X. “This is just the beginning.”

The announcement follows a wave of AI-related investments in India.

Earlier this month, US startup Anthropic said it would open an office in the country next year, following CEO Dario Amodei’s meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Modi later wrote on X that “India’s vibrant tech ecosystem and talented youth are driving AI innovation,” emphasizing his goal to “harness AI for growth.”
