Trump calls Italy PM Meloni “Beautiful young woman” during Egypt summit
US President Donald Trump sparked a mix of reactions at the Gaza Peace Summit in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt, on Monday when he publicly complimented Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni on her appearance, calling her "beautiful" and a "beautiful young woman" during an unscripted speech.
The remarks came amid discussions on Middle East peace efforts, showing off Trump’s classic characteristic off-the-cuff style in an international setting.
Trump, who arrived without First Lady Melania Trump, deviated from prepared remarks to praise Meloni, an ideological ally on issues like immigration and cultural policies.
"If you use the word 'beautiful' in the United States about a woman, that's the end of your political career, but I'll take my chances," Trump said, scanning the stage for Meloni. "Where is she? There she is. You don't mind being called beautiful, right? Because you are."
Meloni, 48, appeared composed but some observers noted she did not seem particularly thrilled by the comment, with footage showing her offering a polite smile.
Trump continued, describing her as "incredible" and noting that she commands respect in her country.
