US President Donald Trump will attend the signing of a peace agreement between Thailand and Cambodia during the upcoming Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) summit, Malaysian Foreign Minister Mohamad Hasan announced Tuesday.

The move comes after Trump mediated a ceasefire between the two countries following five days of clashes in July that killed more than 40 people and displaced around 300,000.

Praise for “Creative Diplomacy”

Hasan said that Trump "is looking forward to witnessing the signing of the peace agreement."

The announcement follows praise for the US president's efforts.

Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet has nominated Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize, citing his "innovative diplomacy" to end the clashes.

Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul said last week that he had received a letter from Trump expressing his desire for the two feuding countries to resolve their tensions.

While the two sides had agreed to a ceasefire after the clashes, they have since accused each other of violating the truce.
