Hebrew media reveals why Netanyahu canceled visit to Egypt summit
‘Israeli’ Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu canceled his participation in the Gaza Peace Summit yesterday in Egypt after several key Arab leaders threatened a boycott, according to reports in Hebrew media.
Although Netanyahu initially accepted President Donald Trump's invitation to the Sharm el-Sheikh conference, the widespread diplomatic backlash forced the decision.
Erdogan Leads Boycott Ultimatum
The threat of a boycott was reportedly severe. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan personally warned Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sissi that he would turn his plane back to Ankara if Netanyahu arrived, according to “Israel Hayom”.
According to the Turkish state-run Anadolu news agency, Erdogan’s aircraft circled near the area before the cancellation was finalized.
Turkish officials also conveyed their anger to Americans, stating the move had not been coordinated with them.
Netanyahu Cites “Holiday” for Withdrawal
Following internal consultations with US and ‘Israeli’ officials, the decision to cancel Netanyahu's visit was made. His office later provided the official public explanation for his withdrawal, citing "the start of the holiday" as the reason.
However, the report indicates that there was no discussion of the matter with the ultra-Orthodox or right-wing coalition factions prior to the announcement, as reported earlier.
A diplomatic source involved in the events told “Israel Hayom” that several countries are "still not ready" for broad regional meetings with ‘Israel’.
The source added that President Trump's "diplomatic spontaneity did not go down smoothly with several regional leaders," underscoring that such a summit requires lengthy diplomatic preparation and prior agreement on key understandings.
