Local councils dissolved in Jordan ahead of elections, reforms
Jordan's Cabinet on Sunday dissolved all municipal councils, governorate councils, and the Greater Amman Municipality Council, with the decision taking effect Monday, July 7, 2025.
Chaired by Prime Minister Dr. Ja'afar Hassan, the move comes as part of the government's efforts to update legislation and regulations concerning local administration and municipal work.
Discussions on this matter began in early June, with a series of meetings held to review recommendations from the Royal Committee to Modernize the Political System on local governance. These discussions are set to continue in the next period.
The meetings focus on legislative proposals aimed at improving municipal and local operations, enhancing financial and administrative transparency and governance, addressing challenges, and solidifying good governance principles to develop services for citizens.
The Cabinet said that dissolving the councils also aims to reinforce transparency, integrity, and ensure neutrality ahead of upcoming elections.
