"Israel" pushes for UNRWA replacements in Gaza, urges aid groups to step in
"Israel" is actively encouraging United Nations agencies and humanitarian organizations to assume the responsibilities of the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) in Gaza, "Israel’s" ambassador to the U.N. in Geneva, Daniel Meron, said on Monday.
Meron stated, "We, the State of Israel, are working to find a substitute for the work of UNRWA inside Gaza." However, he did not provide specific details on how the transition would take place.
"Israel" banned UNRWA from operating on its territory in January, following allegations that some of the agency’s staff were involved in militant activities.
Since then, the "Israeli" government has been urging alternative UN agencies and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) to step in and assume UNRWA’s functions.
The push to replace UNRWA comes amid ongoing humanitarian concerns in Gaza, where hundreds of thousands of Palestinians rely on aid. The agency has warned that its ability to provide essential services is under severe strain due to funding cuts and operational challenges.
