France warns Trump over new tariffs

The European Union will counter in kind and "replicate" any tariffs imposed on it by the United States, the French foreign minister said on Monday.

"There is no hesitation when it comes to defending our interests," Jean-Noel Barrot said in an interview with TF1.

He was speaking after US President Donald Trump announced on Sunday that Washington will move this week to impose 25-percent tariffs on steel and aluminium products.

The EU said Monday it has "not received any official notification" of extra duties after US President Donald Trump warned he would impose the tariffs.

"We will not respond to broad announcements without details or written clarification. The EU sees no justification for the imposition of tariffs on its exports. We will react to protect the interests of European businesses, workers and consumers from unjustified measures," the European Commission said in a statement.
