Iraq closes border crossing with Syria citing security concerns
Iraqi media reported the temporary closure of the Al-Qa'im border crossing with Syria due to escalating developments in Syria.
The closure follows the withdrawal of Syrian army forces from the opposite side of the crossing in Al-Bukamal, halting all movement except for Iraqi citizens returning from Syria – said the reports.
The measure aims to ensure border security amid rising tensions in Syria, with the crossing to remain closed until further notice based on developments in the region.
Meanwhile, Iraqi security sources confirmed tightened measures along the border to prevent potential infiltration or threats resulting from the security vacuum on the Syrian side.
The Al-Qa'im border crossing, a vital gateway for trade and travel between Iraq and Syria, has faced repeated disruptions in recent years due to unstable conditions on both sides of the border.
