The Jordan Food and Drug Administration (JFDA) has suspended the approval of all natural products and dietary supplements containing Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) as of early August.

The decision was made following the JFDA's monitoring of the market, which revealed misuse of these products and reports of adverse effects on the liver and digestive system. Additionally, the agency observed misleading advertisements promoting the supplements for unapproved uses, such as weight loss, depression relief, immune boosting, and cardiovascular protection.

JFDA Director General Dr. Nizar Mahmoud Mheidat stated that the suspension includes halting the sale of these products, pausing the registration of new ones, and ceasing the acceptance of new applications. The decision affects around 17 Ashwagandha-based products currently approved by the JFDA.

The agency has also issued a warning to consumers to consult healthcare providers if they experience symptoms like vomiting, diarrhea, yellowing of the urine, or yellowing of the eyes. It emphasized the importance of adhering to the recommended dosages listed on the product labels.
