Today marks the 77th anniversary of Jordan's independence.

Jordan Independence Day is celebrated on May 25th each year to commemorate the country's independence from the British mandate in 1946.

Jordan’s independence took place during the reign of the founding King Abdullah I bin Al-Hussein (the Emir at the time), who established the Jordanian state on April 11, 1921, under the name "Emirate of Transjordan.”

During his reign, Jordan’s independence was declared and recognized as an independent state named "The Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan."

Independence Day is celebrated with various festivities and events across the country.

Wednesday, the Greater Amman Municipality (GAM) lit up the Abdoun Bridge with the colors of the Jordanian flag, on the occasion of Independence Day.
