Egypt’s National Defense Council has affirmed Cairo’s full support for Saudi Arabia in protecting its security, stability and territorial integrity, amid the ongoing Houthi attacks on the Gulf kingdom, according to a statement by the Egyptian presidency.
“The National Defense Council affirmed its commitment to providing all forms of support to Saudi Arabia to defend its security and stability,” the statement said.
The council also pledged support for safeguarding the kingdom’s national assets and Islamic holy sites, declaring Egypt’s “complete solidarity” with Saudi Arabia.
The statement comes amid escalating Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia.
Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi said on Saturday that Cairo was prepared to take necessary measures to defend the kingdom if requested, while saying that Egypt did not seek to attack any party.
Egypt’s parliament is scheduled to hold an emergency session on Sunday to consider authorizing potential defensive assistance to Saudi Arabia.
