Egypt’s parliament is set to convene an emergency session on Sunday at the request of President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi to consider granting the government the necessary authorization to provide military support to Saudi Arabia if Riyadh asks for it, with the stated aim of protecting the kingdom’s security and stability.
Egyptian House of Representatives Secretary-General Ahmed Manna informed lawmakers that, in accordance with the parliament’s internal regulations and following a request from the president, a plenary session would be held at 1 p.m. local time on Sunday, Oct. 18, 2026.
The move follows recent regional developments and remarks by Sisi during a graduation ceremony for the inaugural graduating cohort of the Egyptian Military Academy.
“We are not seeking a role, but it is inconceivable that we would allow Saudi Arabia and its stability to be threatened,” Sisi said, reaffirming Egypt’s commitment to the kingdom.
Military authorization and Gulf security
Sisi reiterated that Egypt would not allow Saudi Arabia’s security to be compromised. He said Egyptian forces would carry out measures to protect and defend the kingdom in accordance with the directives of Saudi King Salman bin Abdulaziz and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.
He added that taking such measures would require constitutional approval from parliament, which would grant the government the necessary authorization should the need arise.
