Jordan's King Abdullah meets European Council chief in New York

• King Abdullah II and European Council President António Costa discussed strengthening the strategic partnership between Jordan and the European Union.
• The talks focused on regional escalation, developments in the West Bank and Jerusalem, and efforts to support stability in Lebanon and Syria.

His Majesty King Abdullah II met European Council President António Costa on Monday on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly meetings in New York, with His Royal Highness Crown Prince Al Hussein bin Abdullah II in attendance.

The meeting focused on Jordan-EU relations and regional developments, with the King reaffirming Jordan’s commitment to building on its strategic partnership with the European Union.

King Abdullah expressed Jordan’s interest in further expanding cooperation with the EU and looked ahead to the Jordan-EU Investment Conference, which the Kingdom is scheduled to host in November.

The meeting also addressed regional developments and ongoing efforts to contain escalation.

The King stressed the need for the international community to intensify efforts toward a solution that ends the ongoing escalation while protecting the security and sovereignty of Arab states.

King Abdullah warned of the dangers posed by ‘Israeli’ measures in the West Bank and Jerusalem, amid continued tensions and developments in the occupied Palestinian territories.

He also called for support for Lebanon and Syria in their efforts to safeguard their security and the safety of their citizens.

Costa, for his part, expressed the European Union’s appreciation for its partnership with Jordan and affirmed the bloc’s commitment to expanding cooperation with the Kingdom across various areas.

He also underscored Jordan’s important role in efforts to promote stability in the region.

Jordanian Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi and Royal Court Chief Alaa Al-Batayneh also attended the meeting.
