Jordan's King Abdullah II urges diplomacy to prevent regional escalation

King Abdullah II on Friday called for intensified international diplomatic efforts to restore stability in the region and prevent the conflict from expanding.

Speaking alongside Czech President Petr Pavel in Prague, the King reaffirmed Jordan’s support for dialogue, respect for international law and all efforts aimed at achieving peace and stability.

He stressed that Jordan will continue taking all necessary measures to protect its security, sovereignty and the safety of its citizens.

The King said Jordanian-Czech relations have grown significantly since their establishment six decades ago, developing into a strong and longstanding partnership based on mutual trust.

He expressed Jordan’s interest in expanding economic and trade cooperation, encouraging investment and business partnerships, creating new opportunities for the private sector, and strengthening cooperation in defense and security.

King Abdullah also said Jordan looks forward to continued coordination, training and exchange of expertise with Czechia in support of regional and international stability.

Addressing developments in the West Bank, the King voiced Jordan’s rejection of continued settlement expansion, escalating settler violence, forced displacement and attempts to impose a new reality, saying these developments collectively pose a direct threat to regional security.

He reiterated Jordan’s firm rejection of any attempts to displace Palestinians from Gaza or the West Bank.

The King also called on the international community to prevent any attempts to alter the historic and legal status quo at Islamic and Christian holy sites in Jerusalem.

King Abdullah welcomed Czechia’s support for the two-state solution, describing it as the only path toward a just and comprehensive peace. He said Jordan remains committed to working with partners, including Czechia and the European Union, to support regional security, stability and prosperity.

President Petr Pavel welcomed the King and Queen Rania’s visit, saying it provided an opportunity to build on productive talks held in Amman in 2024.

Pavel described Jordan as one of Czechia’s closest and most trusted allies in the Middle East, praising Jordan’s efforts under the King’s leadership to promote peace and prosperity in the region.

He stressed that Jordan’s strength and stability are important to Europe and Czechia.

Pavel also highlighted cooperation between the two countries in delivering humanitarian assistance to Palestinians in Gaza, as well as the medical evacuation program established in 2013.

Under the program, Czech doctors have provided treatment and performed surgeries for thousands of Jordanians and Syrians in Jordan, according to the Czech president.

Pavel expressed his country’s interest in expanding cooperation with Jordan in defense, trade, energy and water-resource management.

The King and Pavel held bilateral talks before their joint statements, attended by Queen Rania and Czech First Lady Eva Pavlová. The talks were followed by expanded discussions on strengthening relations between the two countries and the latest regional developments.

The King and Queen Rania received an official welcome ceremony upon their arrival at Prague Castle.

The talks were attended by Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi, Royal Court Chief Alaa Al-Battayneh, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Maj. Gen. Yousef Huneiti, Jordan’s non-resident ambassador to Czechia Mohammed Hindawi, and Czech Ambassador to Jordan Andrea Kucharova.
