Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said on Monday that it had carried out an attack on what it described as an “enemy command center” in Syria’s al-Tanf region, according to Iran’s official IRNA news agency.
IRNA reported on Telegram that the IRGC conducted a “surprise attack on the enemy’s special operations command center” in the Syrian area, saying the strike was carried out in retaliation for the deaths of soldiers killed in the southeastern Iranian city of Iranshahr.
The claim came a day after Iran’s Tasnim news agency reported the funeral of three soldiers who were killed in a US attack on a military barracks in Bampur, in Iranshahr.
The IRGC had also claimed on Friday that it targeted the al-Tanf base, a strategic military site located near the junction of the Syrian, Iraqi and Jordanian borders. The US military announced in February that it was withdrawing from the base and handing it over to Syrian forces.
However, a Syrian military source told Agence France-Presse that the base had not been hit by any bombardment, denying reports of an attack on the facility.
