Hungarian fighter jets were launched on Thursday after an ‘Israeli’ Arkia Airlines passenger flight lost radio contact with air traffic control while crossing Hungarian airspace, triggering NATO’s highest level of alert.

The incident involved an Airbus A321 (or A321neo) operating a scheduled service from Tel Aviv to Prague.

Prime Minister Péter Magyar confirmed that NATO’s Combined Air Operations Centre activated the top alert for the Hungarian Defence Forces due to the communication failure.

Two JAS-39 Gripen fighter jets were quickly scrambled from their base. The fighters established visual contact with the airliner, after which the crew re-established radio communications with ground control.

Following standard NATO air policing procedures, the Gripens escorted the aircraft through Hungarian airspace to the border.

The flight then continued on its planned route toward Austria and its final destination in Prague without further incident, departing Hungarian airspace around 20:10 local time.

Such scrambles are routine precautionary measures under NATO’s integrated air defense system when aircraft fail to respond to controllers, especially in sensitive European airspace.

No security threat was identified, and officials described it as a brief communication issue.
