Syrian authorities launched a security operation Sunday against Daesh cells in Homs province following an attack that killed three Americans near the ancient city of Palmyra, state media reported.
State-run Alikhbariya television said the operation responded to an ambush on Syrian and American forces during a joint field patrol on Saturday.
- Focused security sweep -
The operation targeted Furqlus, al-Qaryatayn, and surrounding desert regions in Homs province, areas believed to host active Daesh sleeper cells, according to Syrian authorities.
US Central Command (CENTCOM) reported that two US troops and a civilian were killed, while three other service members were injured in the ambush in the Palmyra desert.
- US coalition involvement -
US forces operate in Syria as part of an international coalition against Daesh, established under US leadership in 2014. Syria officially joined the coalition on November 12, 2025. The coalition has carried out operations against Daesh in both Syria and Iraq, though Damascus had not previously been part of the initiative.
Since the overthrow of Bashar al-Assad’s former regime in December 2024, Syria’s new administration has sought to restore security and stabilize conditions across the country.
