The Syrian Interior Ministry on Saturday released new information regarding the recent armed attack on a joint US-Syrian patrol in the Palmyra desert, confirming that the lone Daesh attacker was killed following the clash.

The ministry stated that the assailant opened fire on the patrol, which included international coalition leadership and internal security forces. Syrian authorities stressed that the attacker “has no leadership position within the Internal Security Forces and is not affiliated with the leadership.”

- Warnings ignored -

The ministry revealed that Syrian Internal Security had issued prior warnings, alerting coalition forces in the Badia region to the potential threat of an Daesh attack. Officials indicated that these warnings were not heeded.

“There were warnings from Internal Security to the partner forces in the Badia region about the possibility of an ISIS attack,” the ministry said, adding that the international coalition bears some responsibility for failing to act on the alerts.

- Context of the ambush -

US Central Command (CENTCOM) had earlier reported that two US soldiers and a civilian translator were killed, and three others wounded, in the ambush carried out by the lone Daesh gunman in central Syria.
