  • 'Israel’s' military chief, Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir, dismisses and reprimands senior officers.
  • The moves follow failures to prevent October 7, 2023.

'Israel’s' military has announced the dismissal of three generals and disciplinary measures against several other senior officers, following the October 2023 assault by Hamas, the deadliest attack in the country’s history.

The announcement comes two weeks after 'Israeli' military chief Eyal Zamir called for a “systemic investigation” into the failures that allowed the onslaught, as public pressure grows for a state commission of inquiry.

Among those dismissed were three divisional commanders, including the former military intelligence chief and former head of the southern command General Yaron Finkelman, all of whom had already resigned. Disciplinary measures were also applied to the heads of the navy and air force, four other generals, and several senior officers.

A military statement said the dismissed officers bore personal responsibility for failing to prevent the Hamas operation from Gaza.

While the focus has been on the military, questions remain over whether Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu may face scrutiny for his role in the lapses. Netanyahu has repeatedly said that accountability for the attacks would be addressed only after the war in Gaza concluded.
