Yaghi won the prize alongside Japanese scientist Susumu Kitagawa, and UK-born Richard Robson for their development of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), the Nobel Committee announced Wednesday.
"These constructions, metal–organic frameworks, can be used to harvest water from desert air, capture carbon dioxide, store toxic gases or catalyse chemical reactions," the jury said.

For years, commentators have pointed to Yaghi as a leading candidate for the prize, frequently mentioning Kitagawa’s name alongside his.
Earlier in 2017, King Abdullah II honored Jordanian scientist Professor Omar Yaghi with the King Abdullah II Ibn Al Hussein Medal for Excellence for his groundbreaking contributions to chemistry and scientific research.
Yaghi, once ranked the world’s second most influential chemist, was also a Nobel Prize nominee in 2015.
