UN calls for probe into attacks against Gaza aid flotilla

The United Nations called Wednesday for an investigation into drone "attacks" against a Gaza-bound aid flotilla, saying anyone responsible for the "violations" should be held accountable, Agence France-Presse (AFP) reported. 

"There must be an independent, impartial and thorough investigation into the reported attacks and harassment by drones and other objects" on the Global Sumud Flotilla, UN Human Rights Office spokesperson Thameen Al-Kheetan said in a statement.

The fleet reported that its vessels came under pressure from low-flying drones, explosions, and communications interference off the coast of Greece late Tuesday into early Wednesday.

In a statement shared on social media, participants described the incidents as “psychological operations” aimed at intimidating their convoy.

“Explosions, unidentified drones and communications jamming. We are witnessing these psychological operations firsthand, right now, but we will not be intimidated,” the statement said.

Earlier Wednesday, Italy's Defence Minister Guido Crosetto sent a navy frigate to assist the flotilla following the drone reports. 

"To ensure assistance to the Italian citizens on the 'Flotilla'... I spoke with the Prime Minister and authorized the immediate intervention of the Italian Navy's multi-purpose frigate Fasan, which was sailing north of Crete as part of Operation Safe Sea," Crosetto said in a statement posted by the ministry on X. 

This came at the same time when Antonio Tajani, Italy’s foreign minister, urged ‘Israel’ to guarantee the safety of the fleet reaching Gaza.
