Tunnel's Significance and Controversy
According to Hebrew media, the official reason for Rubio's visit was to participate in the event, which was held at the "City of David" archaeological site. The site is managed by the Elad settler organization.
The tunnel, known as the "Pilgrimage Road," is the same location where Netanyahu previously made what were seen as provocative statements about the "Jewish right" to the Aqsa Mosque.
Buraq Wall
Before going to the event, Rubio and Netanyahu visited the Buraq Wall (Western Wall).
The Secretary of State inserted a note into the cracks of the wall, which read: "May peace reign upon this Holy Land and in the world."
