US Secretary of State Marco Rubio meets with Qatar's Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani
Rubio highlights mediation role of Qatar in Gaza during Doha visit
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio arrived in Doha on Tuesday, meeting with Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani and Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani.
Following the meetings, Rubio emphasized the “security partnership” between the United States and Qatar and thanked the Emir for Qatar’s ongoing mediation efforts to secure the release of captives.
Rubio’s visit comes a week after an unprecedented 'Israeli' airstrike targeted Doha, hitting senior Hamas leaders. It also follows an emergency Arab-Islamic summit held in Qatar, which issued a closing statement strongly condemning “Israeli aggression” and violations of Qatari sovereignty.
The visit appears to be a US diplomatic effort to manage the fallout from the attack while reaffirming Doha’s role as a key mediator in ceasefire negotiations in Gaza.
Acknowledging Mediation Efforts and Reinforcing Security Ties
According to Rubio, discussions focused on two main areas:
- Mediation efforts: Rubio expressed gratitude to the Emir for Qatar’s continued role in negotiating peace agreements and facilitating the return of captives.
- Bilateral relations: The Secretary of State highlighted the strength of US-Qatar relations, affirming the ongoing security partnership between the two nations.
These statements aim to reassure Qatar of Washington’s reliance on the country as a critical negotiation channel, despite recent tensions involving America’s closest regional allies.
