In a landmark academic ruling, the world’s largest association of genocide scholars has concluded that 'Israel’s' actions in Gaza meet the legal definition of genocide - a decision welcomed by Palestinians, who urged urgent international accountability.

The International Association of Genocide Scholars (IAGS) announced on Monday that, based on evidence and facts surrounding the 'Israeli' offensive on Gaza, the legal standards set out in international law for genocide have been fulfilled.

Decision rooted in international law

The IAGS, considered the leading academic authority in the field, brings together hundreds of distinguished experts in international law, human rights, and history.

Its ruling was based on a detailed analysis of the situation in Gaza, measured against the legal benchmarks outlined in the 1948 United Nations Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide.

Palestine: added weight for international courts

The Palestinian Authority welcomed the decision, calling it both a scientific and legal confirmation of realities on the ground.

“This resolution strengthens the documented evidence already presented before international courts,” a Palestinian statement said, stressing that it imposes a “legal and moral obligation” on the international community.

Palestine also called for immediate action to halt the violence, protect civilians, and prosecute Israeli leaders before the International Criminal Court under the Genocide Convention.

The development adds significant weight to legal cases against 'Israel' and increases international pressure on Tel Aviv over its conduct in Gaza.
