Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa is expected to deliver a speech at the United Nations General Assembly in New York next month, a Syrian foreign ministry official confirmed on Monday.

“President al-Sharaa will take part in the United Nations General Assembly, where he will deliver a speech,” the official told AFP, speaking on condition of anonymity as they were not authorized to brief the media.

al-Sharaa assumed power in December after his Islamist faction led a coalition that toppled longtime ruler Bashar al-Assad, ending nearly 14 years of civil war.

In May, al-Sharaa met with US President Donald Trump in Saudi Arabia as part of efforts to seek relief from international sanctions on Syria.

If confirmed, his appearance would mark the first time a Syrian president addresses the UN General Assembly’s high-level week since Nureddin al-Atassi in 1967. This year’s meetings are scheduled for September 22–30.
