'Israeli' Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu expressed optimism on Sunday that his upcoming talks with US President Donald Trump could play a key role in advancing a long-awaited ceasefire and captive release agreement in Gaza.

Speaking to reporters at Ben Gurion Airport before departing for Washington, Netanyahu confirmed that he had dispatched a negotiation team to Doha with specific directives regarding the potential deal.

"We are working to achieve this deal that we have discussed, under the conditions that we have agreed to," Netanyahu said from the airport tarmac. "I have sent a negotiating team (to Doha) with clear instructions."

Netanyahu also said he sees the upcoming meeting with Trump as an opportunity to make meaningful progress. "I think that this meeting with President Trump can definitely help advance this (deal) that we are all hoping for," he added.
