VIDEO: Who is Elias Rodriguez? Man who shouted ‘Free Palestine’ before DC embassy shooting
On the evening of May 21, 2025, a shooting outside the Capital Jewish Museum in Washington, D.C., left two 'Israeli' Embassy staff members dead.
Elias Rodriguez, a 30-year-old man from Chicago, was taken into custody at the scene. Authorities report that during his arrest, Rodriguez chanted “Free Palestine” and reportedly said, “I did it for Gaza.”
The attack occurred shortly after 9 p.m., as the victims—a man and a woman believed to be a couple—were leaving an event hosted by the American Jewish Committee (AJC) at the museum. The gathering, part of the AJC ACCESS Young Diplomats Reception.
Witnesses described Rodriguez pacing outside the museum before approaching a group of four people and opening fire at close range. After the shooting, he entered the museum, where event security detained him. Washington Police Chief Pamela A. Smith confirmed that Rodriguez was seen chanting “Free, free Palestine” while in custody.
The FBI and local authorities are investigating the incident as a potential hate crime and act of terrorism. Rodriguez had no prior criminal record, according to reports from The Economic Times, and appeared to act alone. The motive remains under investigation.
US leaders also denounced the attack. President Donald Trump stated, “These horrible D.C. killings, based obviously on antisemitism, must end, NOW!” Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer called for vigilance against hate crimes. D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser reassured the public that there is no ongoing threat to the community.
As investigations proceed, authorities aim to uncover whether Rodriguez acted alone or if there is a broader threat.
