VIDEO: Hundreds of tourists evacuated from Petra amid flash floods
The Petra Development and Tourism Region Authority (PDTRA) evacuated hundreds of tourists from Petra on Sunday after heavy rainfall triggered flash floods in parts of the region. This precautionary action was taken to ensure the safety of visitors.
Yazan Mahadin, Commissioner of Petra Archaeological Park and Tourism at PDTRA, told the Jordan News Agency (Petra) that ticket sales were suspended at midday as a safety measure.
Earlier that day, 1,785 tourists had visited the site. Civil defense teams evacuated most of them from key locations, including Al-Khazneh, the Siq, the Roman Soldier’s Tomb, the Monastery, and the slopes of Prophet Harun. No injuries were reported.
PDTRA stated that the evacuation was conducted smoothly and in accordance with the highest safety protocols. The authority is continuing to monitor weather conditions and has increased its level of preparedness for emergencies.
Citizens and visitors are urged to follow official guidelines and avoid flood-prone or low-lying areas. PDTRA reiterated that the safety of both residents and visitors remains its top priority.
