Egypt briefs EU on Gaza reconstruction plan
Egypt’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Migration, Dr. Badr Abdelatty, held political consultations on Sunday, March 2, with Dubravka Šuica, the EU Commissioner for Mediterranean Affairs. The discussions focused on strengthening Egyptian-European relations and reviewing the latest regional and international developments of mutual interest.
During the meeting, Abdelatty welcomed the creation of a dedicated position for Mediterranean affairs within the European Commission, describing it as a positive step that reflects the EU’s commitment to strengthening cooperation with the region. He expressed Egypt’s eagerness to collaborate with the EU in implementing the six pillars of their comprehensive strategic partnership, particularly emphasizing the economic dimension.
He also underscored Egypt’s interest in attracting European investments, highlighting the country’s promising opportunities across various sectors. The minister pointed to the Suez Canal Economic Zone (SCZONE) as a global logistics hub and a prime destination for international investment. Additionally, he stressed the potential for cooperation in the energy sector to enhance European energy security.
Regarding migration, Abdelatty called for a comprehensive approach that links migration to development, addresses the root causes of irregular migration, and strengthens legal migration partnerships. He also highlighted the substantial burden Egypt shoulders as a host to millions of refugees and migrants.
The consultations included an exchange of views on key regional developments, particularly the situation in Gaza. Minister Abdelatty briefed Commissioner Šuica on Egypt’s efforts to stabilize and sustain the ceasefire in Gaza and outlined the country's reconstruction plan for the war-torn enclave, which enjoys Arab and Islamic support. He emphasized the need for EU backing of these efforts and reiterated Egypt’s call for a permanent and just political solution leading to the establishment of an independent Palestinian state as the only viable path to regional peace.
Regarding Syria, the minister reaffirmed Egypt’s support for Syrian sovereignty, territorial integrity, and stability. He emphasized the importance of launching a comprehensive political process that includes all segments of Syrian society.
On Lebanon, Abdelatty welcomed the Lebanese government’s recent parliamentary vote of confidence, viewing it as a significant step toward stability and the fulfillment of the Lebanese people’s aspirations. He reiterated Egypt’s full support for Lebanon’s government and institutions and stressed the importance of enforcing the ceasefire agreement while ensuring Israel’s full and unconditional withdrawal from southern Lebanon.
Discussions also covered the ongoing crisis in Sudan, where Abdelatty reaffirmed Egypt’s unwavering support for the Sudanese people, citing the deep historical ties between the two nations. He emphasized Egypt’s commitment to supporting Sudan’s national institutions, maintaining its sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity, and assisting in humanitarian relief efforts.
On Libya, Minister Abdelatty stressed the urgency of resolving the country’s executive authority crisis and forming a new unified government to pave the way for presidential and parliamentary elections. He reiterated Egypt’s commitment to a Libyan-led political process and called for an end to all foreign military presence in the country to restore Libya’s sovereignty and stability.
