  • ‘Israeli’ forces carry out new ground incursion in southern Syria, restricting civilian movement.
  • Damascus denounces repeated violations as a breach of sovereignty and international law.

‘Israeli’ forces advanced into southern Syria on Monday, setting up a military checkpoint in the western countryside of Daraa in what Syrian officials described as a new violation of the country’s sovereignty.

Syria’s news agency SANA reported that the forces moved into the area between the villages of Maariya and Abdeen, where they erected a temporary checkpoint at a site known as Al-Maqsam, restricting the movement of civilians and disrupting daily life.

Checkpoint fuels fear among residents

SANA quoted Mowaffaq Mahmoud, mayor of Abdeen and Maariya, as saying the troops entered the area at dawn and imposed the checkpoint without warning.

“The incursion caused a state of anxiety among residents and severely limited freedom of movement,” Mahmoud said, describing the deployment as sudden and unprovoked.

Residents in the area reported heightened tension as civilians were forced to alter travel routes amid the unexpected military presence.

Pattern of repeated incursions

The latest move comes amid recurrent ‘Israeli’ ground incursions in western Daraa, which Syrian officials say are often accompanied by temporary checkpoints and patrols aimed at pressuring local communities.

On Sunday, the ‘Israeli’ army carried out three separate ground incursions in and around Quneitra province, further escalating tensions along Syria’s southern border.

Sovereignty and international law

Damascus has repeatedly condemned these operations as blatant violations of Syria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, as well as breaches of international law and the 1974 Disengagement Agreement governing the buffer zone in the occupied Golan Heights.

Syrian officials warn that continued incursions undermine regional stability and expose civilians in border areas to ongoing insecurity.

‘Israel’ hasn't issued an official comment on the latest incursion. In previous cases, they have framed similar actions as security-related, a justification rejected by Syrian officials and regional observers.

Analysts caution that the persistence of such violations risks further destabilizing southern Syria and increasing the likelihood of wider escalation along one of the region’s most sensitive frontiers.
