Prime Minister Jafar Hassan oversaw the signing of the Aqaba-Amman Water Desalination and Transport Project (National Carrier) agreement on Sunday between the government and an investor consortium.

The $3 billion project aims to desalinate 300 million cubic meters of seawater annually from the Red Sea to address Jordan's water scarcity. It will include one of the world's largest desalination plants using reverse osmosis technology and a 450-kilometer water transport system to Amman.

The initiative, a public-private partnership, is set to provide sustainable water solutions for 4 million people and reduce pressure on Jordan’s water resources. The US Agency for International Development (USAID) has played a vital role in supporting this strategic project.

The project is a key step toward reducing reliance on overexploited groundwater, ensuring sustainable water supply, and addressing Jordan's growing demand for drinking water over the next two decades.
