Jordan, Syria foreign Ministers meet in Amman
Jordan welcomed today a high-level Syrian delegation led by Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaybani, in the first diplomatic visit to Amman since the toppling of the Bashar Al-Assad regime in December last year.
Jordan’s Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi emphasized the Kingdom’s support for the Syrian people in their efforts to rebuild a united and stable Syria, highlighting the importance of fostering cooperation and solidarity between the two nations.
In a press conference hosted at the Foreign Ministry in Amman, Safadi stated that Jordan will support Syria’s reconstruction efforts, stressing the importance of a stable, secure, and unified Syria as a key factor for regional stability, including Jordan's own security.
He announced that high-level meetings with the Syrian delegation would take place today to discuss shared concerns and mutual interests.
Safadi also revealed that agreements had been made to establish joint committees in various sectors between Jordan and Syria to strengthen cooperation moving forward, and that discussions are underway regarding cooperation in the energy and electricity sectors.
For his part, Syria's Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaybani expressed his gratitude toward Jordan for its consistent support and generosity, particularly for hosting Syrian refugees over the past 13 years.
Al-Shaybani said that the current situation in Syria has effectively ended the issue of drug smuggling into Jordan.
The pair highlighted that both nations are aligned in their commitment to safeguarding the security of their shared border.
Jordan’s engagement with Syria follows a recent visit by Safadi to Damascus, where he met Ahmed Al-Sharaa, head of the new Syrian administration.
During that visit, Safadi reaffirmed Jordan’s commitment to supporting Syria’s reconstruction efforts and helping its people achieve stability.
He emphasized that his visit to Syria, under royal directives, demonstrated Jordan's solidarity with the Syrian people in their quest for rights and aspirations.
Al-Shaybani’s regional diplomatic tour began in Qatar on Sunday. Accompanied by Syrian Defense Minister Murhaf Abu Qasra and Intelligence Chief Anas Khattab, Shaybani’s visit marks his first official engagement with Qatari officials to explore avenues of cooperation.
He held discussions with key figures, including Minister of State at the Qatari Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Mohammed bin Abdulaziz Al-Khulaifi.
Al-Shaybani also visited the UAE on Monday where he met top diplomat Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan to "discuss ways to enhance the strong fraternal relations between the two countries," UAE's official WAM news agency reported.
Sheikh Abdullah also "reiterated the UAE's firm position in supporting Syria's independence and sovereignty over all its territories".
