First severe bird flu case in US confirmed

A patient in Louisiana has been hospitalized with a severe avian influenza infection, marking the first case of its kind in the United States, according to the CDC on Wednesday.

While the current outbreak has seen 61 cases nationwide, the others have been mild.

The new patient had contact with sick and dead birds in backyard flocks.
