"I cannot in good conscience perform there,” Macklemore on Dubai concert cancellation
Grammy-winning artist Macklemore detailed the reasons behind the cancellation of his upcoming show in Dubai, citing concerns over the United Arab Emirates' (UAE) alleged role in the ongoing genocide and humanitarian crisis in Sudan.
"After careful thought, numerous conversations with trusted organizers and friends, and my own reading and research, I have decided to cancel my upcoming show in Dubai this October. I don't take this decision lightly," Macklemore wrote in an Instagram post.
"The crisis in Sudan is catastrophic," Macklemore said. "Over ten million people have been displaced, millions face imminent famine, sexual violence is widespread, and at least 150,000 lives have been lost, including thousands of children."
The rapper claimed that the UAE's role in funding the Rapid Support Forces is a key factor in the ongoing conflict. "I cannot in good conscience perform in a country that is contributing to such a horrific situation," he stated.
He continued, "Until the UAE stops arming and funding the RSF, I will not perform there.”
