Tourism Ministry registers 15,000 out of 100,000 discovered archaeological sites
The Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities announced the discovery of 100,000 archaeological sites in Jordan, with 15,000 of them officially registered.
During a speech on behalf of Minister of Tourism and Antiquities Makram Al-Qaisi, the Assistant Director of the Department of Antiquities Ahmed Musa said that Jordan's tourism sector provides 55,000 job opportunities.
He added that efforts are underway to expand investment in the sector to increase this number.
Musa highlighted that the tourism sector contributes to 13 percent of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP), along with an indirect contribution of 30 percent.
This announcement was made during the inauguration of a workshop for the launch of the exhibition "Mediterranean Information and Communication Technology Platform for Cultural Heritage" by UNESCO in the archaeological city of Petra.
Musa underscored the project's significance in globally promoting Jordan's tourist and archaeological sites, especially Petra, through the use of digital technologies that attract tourists from around the world.
He also emphasized the project's role in providing employment opportunities and enhancing cooperation between universities and startups.
Furthermore, Musa pointed out that utilizing technology to interpret the cultural significance of archaeological sites helps alleviate pressure on these sites, document archaeological information and enhance their management, ultimately contributing to their development.
