The Public Security Directorate (PSD) denied Monday that Bassem Awadallah, who was convicted on sedition charges, had entered a hunger strike three days ago, according to CNN.

CNN quoting the PSD reported that the allegations of Awadallah's strike are inaccurate, adding that he refused to eat on Monday only.

The PSD added that Awadallah had been eating the meals allocated to him regularly in the past three days. Awadallah had breakfast and lunch on Sunday, Feb. 12, and has been allowed to bring in additional food supplements.

They explained that he refused to eat on Monday only, but he did not submit a written statement to prison authorities declaring his intent to go on hunger strike as required by the law and procedures.

The PSD also denied the validity of Awadallah's lawyer's statement that his client was subjected to "physical, psychological and emotional torture" while in detention, stressing that he was not subjected to any kind of torture.

They added: "Awadallah’s statements to the court during his trial were given voluntarily with no coercion."

"Awadallah was guaranteed due process, in accordance with Jordanian laws and regulations."

According to the PSD, Awadallah can communicate with his lawyer in Jordan at all times, and he is also able to contact his relatives occasionally, and he speaks on the phone on a weekly basis with his family and friends.

Additionally, the US consul visits Awadallah periodically as he has US citizenship.

The PSD noted that Awadallah's meals are prepared under strict health supervision by specialized doctors to ensure that he remains in good health, in addition to undergoing periodic examinations, whether by the medical team at the Correction and Rehabilitation Center or by his personal doctor.

Earlier Monday, a statement issued by Awadallah's US attorney said he had begun a hunger strike to protest his imprisonment and asked the US government to return him to the United States as a US citizen.
