Social media users expressed their anger and frustration at the incident in which a premature deceased baby was placed inside a cardboard box at Al-Bashir Hospital.

The statements of Abdelmane al Sulaimat, the hospital’s director, caused a wave of anger among Jordanians.

Sulaimat said that he had first worked to provide the necessary help to babies in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), and that the followed procedure by most countries when infants in the NICU die is to wrap them in a cloth inside a cardboard box in the morgue.

Jordanians took to social media to criticize his statements.

A social media user wrote "Someone please tell the director that it’s their duty to provide premature babies with care. If there is a shortage in NICU beds then the government must transfer the babies to a private hospital.”

The father of the child told Roya he and his wife underwent in vitro fertilization (IVF) after which they were blessed with triplets, two boys and a girl. The girl died at birth and both boys were placed in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU).

Days later, he learnt of the passing of one of the boys at 1pm while visiting the NICU, and was told he died at 8am, Ramamneh explained to Roya.

He added that when he went to receive the infant’s body, he found it wrapped in a blue piece of cloth inside a dirty cardboard box in the morgue.

Another social media user said “There must be an investigation, and every negligent person should be held accountable.”

Additionally, another activist said “Unfortunately, the worst logistical services are in al Bashir Hospital.. and although thousands of incidents have happened, no one is ever held accountable.”

"The hospital requires restructuring. Many strange incidents have happened that make me shiver," a user wrote.
