Wednesday, the body of a deceased baby was placed inside a cardboard box at Al-Bashir Hospital, the father told Roya.

The father, Abdel Salam al Ramamneh, expressed his deep dismay and sadness regarding the "bad treatment of [his] infant’s body".

Ramamneh told Roya he and his wife underwent in vitro fertilization (IVF) after which they were blessed with triplets, two boys and a girl. The girl died at birth and both boys were placed in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU).

Days later, he learnt of the passing of one of the boys at 1pm while visiting the NICU, and was told he died at 8am, Ramamneh explained to Roya.

He added that when he went to receive the infant’s body, he found it wrapped in a blue piece of cloth inside a dirty cardboard box in the morgue.

The director of the hospital, Abdelmane al Sulaimat, said this was “the followed procedure in such cases” when the father contacted him.

Sulaimat said that he had first sought after admitting the children in the NICU to give them the needed help and care.

Sulaimat noted that the procedure taken when infants in the NICU die is to wrap them in a cloth inside a cardboard box in the morgue.

He added this procedure is followed by most countries after deaths of premature babies.

Sulaimat denied the box was dirty or that it had been used before.

He stressed that the hospital will open an investigation to look into the father’s allegations.
