Authorities release latest developments concerning Awadallah, Sharif Hassan in 'sedition case'

The case of the former Chief of the Royal Hashemite Court (RHC) Bassem Awadallah and Sharif Hassan bin Zaid, who have been detained for their involvement in a 'sedition' case since March, is still pending with the State Security Prosecutor.

The State Security Prosecutor has the authority to decide whether or not to refer it to the State Security Court (SSC) which, up until now, has not been referred.

The State Security Prosecution charged the detainees with two counts of carrying out acts that undermine the political system of the government of the Kingdom in accordance with Article 149 of the Penal Code, the punishment for which ranges between three and 20 years.

The second is carrying out actions that violate public order in accordance with Article 2 of the Terrorism Prevention Law, the punishment for which ranges between five and 20 years, according to Awadallah's lawyer Mohammad al-Afif.

Afif met with his client seven times at the location in which he is being held and confirmed that he is in good health. He explained that the case is currently being investigated by the Public Prosecutor.

A judicial source denied the rumours circulating about a session being held at the SSC Monday to begin the trial. He stressed that the rumours are false since the case has not been referred to the SSC yet.

In April, the competent authorities released 16 retired military personnel close to Prince Hamzah bin al-Hussein, along with Awadallah and King Abdullah II's half-brother Sharif al-Hassan, for attempting to 'destabilize Jordan's security and stability.'

April 14, the State Security Prosecutor officially received an investigative case related to 'destabilizing' the security and stability of Jordan.

As a result of the case, a series of arrests were made involving the former director of the Royal Hashemite Court Bassem Awadallah and Al-Sharif Hassan Bin Zaid, along with 14 other individuals who were not identified.
