Ruggedness of land prevents complete eradication of locust swarms: Tafilah agriculture director

The Director of Tafilah Agriculture, Hussein Al-Qatamin, confirmed Monday that the operations of combating desert locust swarms are carried out through teams from the Ministry of Agriculture. Large-scale spraying operations over many locust hotspots in the northern regions of Tafilah have commenced, especially the areas of Al-Burbita, the extension of Al-Hasa stream, and the areas of Majhood waterfall.

Qatamin said that the spraying operations were conducted using different mechanisms to ensure maximum efficacy to rid the area of locusts, however, the "ruggedness" of the area prevented the swarms from being completely eliminated.

He indicated that the control and monitoring operations are continuing efforts to prevent the spread of the swarms to the rest of the agricultural areas, and that all teams will remain on standby to tackle any possible emergency.

Field teams in the Tafilah Agriculture Directorates began operations at dawn on Monday, to combat the locust swarms that migrrated in large numbers to the aforementioned areas.
