German newspaper: Jordan is the safest country amid the spread of coronavirus worldwide

The German Mayor, Achim Engler, who has been living in Amman since 2013, has described Jordan as the safest country in the world amid the spread of coronavirus worldwide.

In an article published in the German newspaper, WochenSpiegel, on Tuesday, March 24, Engler said "quick and rigorous: this is how the Jordanian government is reacting in these days of the corona pandemic. Only one person was infected with corona when the country closed its borders. Only Jordanians were allowed into the country. However, arrivals were brought from the airport directly to quarantine. Around 5,000 people were quarantined in hotels in the Dead Sea and Amman."

"Another day later, a 14-day curfew begins, we are only allowed to leave the house for basic needs. You can see the Jordanian army in every street corner. The Defence Law is in force. But we don't necessarily need to leave the house either. We can use an app for delivery services from supermarkets. In the meantime, the numbers are skyrocketing, around 100 people were reported to be infected with corona in Jordan, while I am writing this text," he said.

"My wife has a home office, and as an engineer, she has to do some fine work on the new Ritz Carlton Hotel. Meanwhile, I'm testing Skype with my students. It works more badly, but why is that? It is currently being announced in the news that a bad internet connection can be expected in the near future. Logical, since the whole country is at home," he posted.

"Nobody was allowed to leave their home as sirens go off every day across the Kingdom. Even supermarkets and bakeries had to close. Police and military patrol were deployed in the streets. Only employees in the health sector were able to move. Whoever violates the orders was taken to prison."

In a second article published yesterday in Bild newspaper, Engler discussed how tourism was affected in the Rose City of Petra, which was visited annually by more than a million tourists. However, no one is currently allowed to enter the city except for workers who sterilize the area.

He also talked about how employees' salaries were paid and the government postponed paying the electricity bills and other bills, noting also to the government members' decision to donate their salaries to the general budget.
