The town of Umm Qais is home to a myriad Roman structures
Significant archaeological finds in northern town of Umm Qais
A team of archaeology and anthropology students from the University of Yarmouk discovered new archaeological sites in Umm Qais today.
The students were able to find several water tunnels in the middle of the city, dozens of meters under the ancient city’s main street, the Decumanus Maximus.
The team was also able to discover a temple with a hellenistic design, which the university believes will help reveal more information about Ancient Greek temples in Jordan which have been reused in the Roman, Byzantine and Islamic ages.
The university said that the water system found under the city carried water throughout the entire city, and that it has stone valves through which the pressure and the distribution of the water was controlled.
It said that these discoveries and findings are rare in Jordan and nearby countries, and is a first for Umm Qais.
