Argentine television presenter Florencia Peña resigned from her role on the streaming program “El Show del Verano” on Luzu TV after erroneously announcing the death of Jorge Messi, father of football star Lionel Messi.

The false report was made live on air shortly after Argentina’s opening group stage victory.

During the broadcast, Peña stated that Jorge Messi had suddenly passed away, suggesting that Lionel Messi might have to leave the tournament.

She attributed the information to unverified details relayed through her earpiece by production staff. Moments later, upon clarification from producers, she retracted the claim on air, noting that it had not been confirmed.

The misinformation spread rapidly across social media, prompting swift denials from the Messi family.

Jorge Messi, aged 68, was confirmed to be alive and under medical supervision in Argentina for a pre-existing health condition, with reports indicating he was recovering favorably.

The family publicly urged media outlets to respect their privacy amid the heightened attention following Lionel Messi’s emotional performance in the match.

Peña issued a public apology on social media, expressing regret to the Messi family and accepting responsibility for the error.

She stated that she had decided to step aside from the program to address the situation. In her message, she acknowledged the distress caused and emphasized personal accountability despite the information originating from the production team.

Luzu TV responded by dismissing the production personnel responsible for providing the unverified information. The channel issued a statement confirming that those involved had been relieved of their duties.
