The Jordanian Cabinet decided during its meeting on Tuesday to approve the inclusion of the Baptism Site (Al-Maghtas) into the National Network of Protected Areas, officially declaring it a natural reserve spanning an area of 10 square kilometers.

The decision comes in conjunction with the commencement of preparations for the 2030 celebrations marking the second millennium of the baptism of Jesus Christ, while completing the necessary legal procedures in accordance with governing legislation.

The cabinet's approval is based on the site's exceptional environmental value as well as its global religious, cultural, and historical significance as a UNESCO World Heritage site. Al-Maghtas harbors an integrated ecosystem and natural habitats where riverine and wetland environments intersect with valleys and plains.

The newly designated natural reserve encompasses the main Baptism Site, its natural surrounding zones, and connected valleys, including Wadi Al-Kharrar and Wadi Gharaba, alongside areas tied directly to the Jordan River.

Authorities highlighted that the designation will contribute directly to safeguarding local biodiversity and advancing scientific research.

Furthermore, the step is structured to foster sustainable eco-tourism and religious tourism while simultaneously creating tangible economic opportunities for surrounding local communities.
